Very nice piece of Shinoxylon (pepperwood), Blue Forest, Wyoming, USA.
With top size, it offers a wonderful core called "duramen", surrounded by sapwood (light brown color) which shows visible growth pattern (dark circles) as well as "rays" (medullar rays). The beauty of this piece also resides in its preserved bark, separated from the sapwood by blue agate and/or orange calcite. The back is rough.

Shinoxylon species are the most found in the "Blue Forest" location, named after the numerous blue-colored (agate) pieces that were/are extracted. This forest is date from Lower Miocene (-56 to -39 millions years).
