Large piece of Shinoxylon (pepperwood), Blue Forest, Wyoming, USA.
With top size, it offers a wonderful core called "duramen", surrounded by sapwood (black to brown color) which shows visible growth pattern (dark circles) as well as "rays" (medullar rays). Some bark elements are also visible, separated from the sapwood by blue agate and/or orange calcite. The back is rough.

Shinoxylon species are the most found in the "Blue Forest" location, named after the numerous blue-colored (agate) pieces that were/are extracted. This forest is date from Lower Miocene (-56 to -39 millions years).
